Steve Bergen

Picture

An innovative educator who has the unique ability to connect with learners of all ages and all skill levels and a visionary technology expert, Steve Bergen serves as the Executive Director of Tech International Charter School. This is a position that his extensive experience in education and expertise in technology qualify him for.

Mr. Bergen is a highly creative and effective educator with more than thirty-seven years experience as math teacher, computer teacher, math department head, Director of Technology and Chief Information Officer. In 1982, he founded a technology consulting company called The Original Teaching Company and created a professional development workshop called Summercore, which has been attended by over 2,700 teachers and administrators. To this day, Mr. Bergen works as the Co-Director of this organization and has conducted Summercore at over 50 schools in 15 states and overseas in Belgium. One school characterized him as “a missionary, an inspiration, and a great teacher with much to give to many.” As an educator, Mr. Bergen’s work experience includes teaching students of diverse age levels and backgrounds, ranging from elementary school mathematics to technology integration and curriculum workshops for teachers. He possesses exceptional managerial, teaching, and motivational skills.

Mr. Bergen's job as founder and co-director of The Original Teaching Company since 1982 has provided him with unique leadership experiences in working with schools and administrators. Each summer, he travels to 4-5 schools to work with the administrative and technology teams, helping to strategize key initiatives. This consulting involves issues of budget, leadership, pedagogy, and short and long-range planning. His expertise in the multiple roles of directing, coordinating, motivating and overseeing colleagues is a result of having conducted Summercore technology workshops for independent teachers and administrators. He has spoken at dozens of workshops for school administrators on numerous issues. The entrepreneurial acumen needed to run his own successful business venture has given him attributes that match well with the Executive Director position at the Tech International Charter School.

After graduating with a Masters in Mathematics from Wesleyan University, Mr. Bergen became a teacher of mathematics and computer as well as a department head at several independent schools in Virginia, Connecticut, Boston and New York. In 2007, he made a decision to leave the world of independent schools and spend the rest of his professional life helping underserved children and families. His personal essay, titled Harlemball, Playing Hard to Address the Digital Divide, was written in Fall 2007. This community outreach endeavor offers computer training and equipment to families in Harlem, the Bronx and in Brooklyn. It has been wildly successful. Since its inception, over 300 computers have been given away to families who experience the “digital divide” but now understand that technology can be used as a tool to build the skills that increase student achievement. Mr. Bergen has used technology to make connections and create projects within the curriculum that have allowed him to collaborate with teachers in Sudan, Germany, Belgium, Japan and Australia.
