Curriculum
Tech International Charter School believes that a sound curriculum is the most important component of a successful school program. The curriculum will help to form the common language of the school and will be consistently applied across instructors. TI will use a standards-aligned curriculum that is academically rigorous. The school will use the Core Knowledge Curriculum as the foundation for shaping what is taught and will follow the Common Core Learning Standards as New York State accepts them. The instructional leadership team will be cautious when making any modifications to the program. To be realistic about the achievement gap in math and English language arts that many students of CSD 10 face, it will be imperative to do plenty of skill remediation in order to meet grade level expectations. On the other hand, TI’s flexible student grouping and academic schedule will also allow for challenging content and enrichment activities to be offered to higher-level learners.
The 6th grade curriculum is currently being developed with the support of a curriculum coordinator and each year the process will be repeated to develop the continuum of courses. It will be the responsibility of school leaders, teachers, and Advisory Board members to review and revise content on a regular basis to stay true to the school’s mission and ensure student achievement increases. Teaching teams will share in planning for curricular adjustments and creation of activities that enhance curriculum keeping technology and international themes in mind. They will also be responsible for communicating pacing, scope and sequence, and expected outcomes to students and their families. All teachers will be given the opportunity to summarize the content of each unit covered during the school’s open house event at the beginning of the year and throughout as they see fit. Part of this explanation will include how the curriculum will be translated through integrated content project-based learning activities that will take place during Project Development sessions.
Whether it is an essay, a take home test, or a statewide exam, students will be given the criteria and expectations for meeting achievement goals. Teachers will help students make real life connections between themselves and the content being taught as a way of invoking interest. With middle school students, it is crucial to have content that engages them in a meaningful way to produce outstanding results. Curriculum must also be appropriately paced and differentiated to hold interest. The history, backgrounds, and cultural identities of Bronx children will be incorporated into the curriculum, which will ultimately raise levels of motivation for achievement and deepen student understanding of the importance of education. Once this captivating concept has been internalized through the execution of TI PRIDE and new experiences have been shared, students will be able to consider the entire world part of their community.
In recognition of the community where Tech International Charter School is based, and in honor of New York City’s fabric as a whole, the school’s curriculum will have an international focus. Students are more likely to achieve if they are invested in the content they are learning; educators who are passionate about their practice and about the curriculum are best equipped to shape their instruction for student success. Tech International Charter School’s multicultural and multidimensional curriculum will produce those conditions for our students and teachers.
